Ramadan Reflections: Meet Najib

We had a lovely chat with one of our amazing colleagues from our Project Management Office team, Najib to get a deeper understanding and appreciation of what Ramadan truly means, and he was kind enough to share his personal experiences and stories with us.

What does Ramadan mean to you?

Ramadan is a deeply spiritual time for me. It's a month dedicated to reflection, gratitude, and strengthening my connection with God, family, and the community. During this period, I focus on self-discipline, spiritual renewal, and fostering empathy for those less fortunate. It's a time to cleanse the soul, seek forgiveness, and make a conscious effort to improve oneself. The sense of unity and shared purpose during Ramadan is incredibly uplifting, as everyone comes together to observe this sacred month.

What does fasting during Ramadan look like for you?

Fasting during Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset, but it goes beyond just physical restraint. It's about cultivating patience, kindness, and self-improvement. The fast is a reminder to be mindful of our actions and thoughts, to avoid negative behaviours, and to focus on positive deeds. It's a shared experience that strengthens bonds with family, colleagues, and the wider community. The act of fasting teaches resilience and helps develop a deeper sense of empathy for those who face hunger and hardship daily.

How do you observe Ramadan?

I begin my day with Suhoor, a pre-dawn meal that provides the energy needed to sustain me through the day. Throughout the day, I balance work with moments of prayer and reflection, taking time to read the Quran and engage in spiritual practices. As the sun sets, I break my fast with Iftar, often starting with dates and water, followed by a variety of meals shared with family and friends. This communal aspect of Iftar is one of the highlights of Ramadan, as it brings people together in a spirit of generosity and gratitude. Additionally, I make a conscious effort to engage in charitable giving, as helping those in need is a key part of this month.

Why is this time of year important to you?

Ramadan serves as a reset for the soul, offering an opportunity to slow down, focus on gratitude, and strengthen relationships. It's a time to reflect on one's life, seek forgiveness, and make positive changes. The sense of community during Ramadan is profound, as people come together in worship and generosity. This month-long journey of self-improvement and spiritual growth leaves a lasting impact, fostering a deeper connection with God and a greater appreciation for the blessings in life.

What are the biggest challenges during this time?

Balancing work, fasting, and late-night prayers can be physically challenging, especially when energy levels are low. However, the support from colleagues and understanding from others makes it easier to manage these demands. The biggest lesson Ramadan teaches is resilience and mindfulness. It's about pushing through the physical discomfort and focusing on the spiritual benefits. The sense of accomplishment and inner peace that comes from observing Ramadan is incredibly rewarding.

What’s your top tip for a colleague during Ramadan?

A small act of consideration can make a big difference. Being mindful of meeting times, offering flexibility, or simply asking how someone is doing can go a long way towards making Ramadan more inclusive. Understanding and respecting the needs of those observing Ramadan fosters a supportive and inclusive work environment. It's also helpful to be aware of the significance of this month and to offer words of encouragement and support.

What kinds of food do you break your fast with?

Traditionally, I break my fast with dates and water, as this is a practice followed by the Prophet Muhammad. Dates provide a quick source of energy, and water helps rehydrate the body. After this initial break, I enjoy a variety of meals that often include soups, salads, rice dishes, and grilled meats. Sharing these meals with family and friends makes the moment even more special, as it reinforces the sense of community and togetherness that is central to Ramadan. The meals are not just about nourishment but also about celebrating the blessings of life and the joy of being with loved ones.
