From Biomedical Science Grad to Team Manager | Alex's story

Alex is a perfect example of how diverse academic backgrounds can lead to fulfilling careers in the water industry. With a degree in Biomedical Science and a year of experience as a Lab Analyst, Alex made a bold move into the world of water and wastewater by joining Severn Trent’s Operational and Environmental Leadership Graduate Scheme. Just two years later, she’s now thriving as a Team Manager in our Water Networks, looking after large diameter water mains.

We caught up with Alex to hear more about her journey, what she’s learned, and why Severn Trent has been the perfect place to grow.

What inspired you to join Severn Trent?

I studied Biomedical Science at University and worked as a Lab Analyst for a year, which gave me a strong foundation in scientific thinking and data analysis. But I realised I wanted something more hands-on and operational.

My University tutor connected me with someone working in Severn Trent’s microbiology labs, and they kindly gave me a tour. I was amazed by the scale of the work and the variety of departments. It opened my eyes to the many different roles within one company.

What’s the graduate scheme been like for you?

It’s been incredibly varied. I’ve worked across Wastewater Recycling, Permitting, and Water Networks, and I’ve done DILOs (Days In the Life Of) in other areas, too.

These experiences allowed me to build skills in project management, health and safety, and people management, and gave me a deeper understanding of the science and engineering behind our processes.

I have also been really supported by the Severn Trent Academy, where you are able to enrol on courses suited to your personal development. Everyone has been so supportive in my development, including a designated mentor, helpful team managers, as well as the graduate network – it’s honestly been great!

You’re already a Team Manager! How’s that been?

It’s been a really rewarding step. Managing a team brings new challenges and learning opportunities every day. I’ve been lucky to work with a fantastic group of people who’ve supported me throughout. It’s definitely helped me grow both professionally and personally.

What’s the best part of working at Severn Trent?

Definitely the people and the variety of opportunities. There’s always something new to learn or get involved in, and everyone is so passionate about what they do.

What’s next for you?

I’d love to stay in Team Management after finishing the graduate scheme. I’ve really enjoyed working in the operational side of the business, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.

Any advice for future those thinking of joining Severn Trent on Graduate programme?

“Take the time to understand the company values – they genuinely resonate with everyone here. That alignment makes a big difference. And don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions – people are always happy to help.”
