Apprentice Environmental Practitioner

This Environmental Practitioner apprenticeship operates to teach you how to promote sustainable growth whilst maintaining responsibilities to our environment.

Let's cut straight to it

Taking care of ‘one of life’s essentials’ – it’s our purpose and we want you to be part of it. Supplying wholesome drinking water, treating wastewater and recycling this back to the environment responsibly is no mean feat. We serve around 8 million people across the Midlands and Wales and unlike other businesses, our delivery is non-negotiable. It’s a matter of life.

Many of our employees are also our customers, so we truly take pride in what we do! Employing people from across our communities and beyond, Severn Trent is an exciting and inclusive place to work – a place where you can be curious, can be ‘Wonderfully You’ and where you can truly make an impact to our environment, now and for future generations.

Let's tell you more

Apprenticeship Programmes are a great way to earn and learn! Our Apprentice Environmental Practitioner Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business. Entering an Apprenticeship scheme with us involves working towards the role of a fully-fledged professional, earning a salary, whilst also being able to maintain a sense of academic achievement. At Severn Trent we provide the perfect mix between hands-on experience and a formal qualification, enabling our apprentices to make a real lasting difference to our customers and communities, not just for now, but far into the future.

You’ll be supported every step of the way, by your line manager and mentor.

You will be working within either our Biodiversity and Ecology team or Environmental Regulation team in Customer Operations, or our Asset Planning team in Chief Engineer. Dependent on your placement you’ll cover:

Biodiversity and Ecology

Within our Biodiversity and Ecology team you will help us to promote and protect the natural environment we work in and the challenges and opportunities that brings. In your daily work, you interact with junior and senior members of your team, as well as external partners and stakeholders.

With a balance of office and field visits, you’ll work with technical specialists both within and beyond your profession, for example, environmental scientists and consultants, environmental impact assessors, and ecologists.

Environmental Regulation

In our Environmental Regulation team you will be at the forefront of protecting the environment each and everyday. This will mean understanding how the design and build of new assets translates into operations and ensuring we are identifying emerging environmental issues.

You will receive a background into regulation within a practical setting with opportunities across the whole water cycle.

Asset Planning

Within Asset Planning in Chief Engineer you would be working on the capital programme to improve river health.  This is an exciting and rare opportunity to learn new skills on your journey to becoming an expert hydraulic modeller, working with water quality specialists to determine what solution is required to meet an obligation and our fair share in removing harm due to intermittent discharges of overflows.

You will be helping to coordinate surveys and getting out and about attending site visits to help in your understanding of our asset performance and our impacts on the environment.
