What it’s really like working for a FTSE100 company…
We chat to Rachel, who is head of our Investor Relations Team, about what it’s like working in the world of a FTSE100 company, she chats to us about her career, a typical day, and also why working in a FTSE100 is where you want to be.
First tell us, a little bit about yourself and where your career began?
I started my career as an auditor then came to Severn Trent not long after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. Since then, I’ve done a range of roles, starting in the Group Financial Accounting and Reporting team, moving into Financial Performance and Analysis, Business Partnering and now Investor Relations, which is something I didn’t even know existed before joining Severn Trent.
You’ve really seen a wide range of teams in Finance. So, tell us what does a typical day look like for you as Head of Investor Relations?
Most days I’m based at our Head Office in Coventry and will spend a lot of my time meeting various stakeholders across the business, from Finance to Operations, Strategy and Sustainability teams. I also spend a lot of time with external stakeholders, including our investors, sell-side analysts, and advisors. When I’m at my desk, I might be working on our latest financial results, a board paper, investor targeting, answering investor or analyst questions or deep diving into valuation models. The thing I really enjoy about IR is that no two days are ever the same. Outside of the annual results cycle we can be working on any number of things, but we're never bored!
That sounds really interesting Rachel, I’m sure some days get pretty busy! For those reading and reading and thinking about a career with us, what do you enjoy most about working for Severn Trent?
It’s cliché but the best thing is definitely the people and the culture. It’s an environment where everyone is encouraged to be themselves and the people are so lovely and warm, but at the same time we know how important the job we do is. Everyone is committed to doing the best job possible and we take a huge amount of pride in the work we do and making sure we continue to deliver for our customers and the environment. It’s that sense of purpose, and living and breathing our values, that really makes the culture special. That all comes through in our engagement scores, which are some of the best in the world, and our performance - where we’re consistently a sector leader.
As some will know, we’re not any company we’re a FTSE100, which means we’re one of the largest actively traded companies in the UK. So, tell us what’s the biggest benefit colleagues get working for a FTSE100?
I'd probably say the variety of the work and the opportunities it presents. We've got pretty much every corporate function you could think of under one roof and there's always something exciting to get involved with. I think the level of quality and rigour expected of us as a FTSE100 is also really motivating for anyone in a profession such as finance. We embrace high standards and always want to push the benchmark - as a great example, last year we won FTSE100 Annual Report of the Year at the Corporate Governance Institute awards which was a lovely moment for the whole Severn Trent team.s
That’s really insightful, thanks Rachel. What are you most looking forward to in the next 12-18 months?
We're in a really exciting moment as a company. We've just submitted a £13 billion plan for 2025-30, pretty much doubling our investment levels from the current five-year period. It will require a lot of work over the next 12-18 months to get the business ready for such an exciting growth period and finance has a critical role to play in that. In my role on the Senior Management Team, we'll be thinking about how we best support the business deliver everything it needs to while at the same time making sure our processes and controls remain robust. And in my IR world, I'll be focused on making sure our investors are kept well informed of developments along the way.
Some big numbers there, which means some big ambitious goals, we need great people to help us deliver. So, what would you say to anyone looking to apply for a role at Severn Trent?
You couldn’t pick a better time! We’re entering such an exciting period of growth and investment, there is absolutely loads to get stuck into. We’ve just submitted a £13 billion plan to our regulator and delivering that plan is going to need a huge amount of work and support from our finance colleagues. So come join us!
