What does your current role involve?
I lead a team of eight managers and I’m responsible for waste water assets which include sewage treatment works, pumping stations and the network across my county. My primary focus is to deliver an exceptional customer service across all levels.
How did you start- what’s been your career path so far?
Prior to joining Severn Trent Water I worked for another water company. With the experience I had gained, I wanted to further develop my career aspirations. I researched Severn Trent’s strategy which was very appealing. The company clearly focused on delivering operational excellence in everything it did, and I wanted to be part of such a future focused company delivering the best customer experience. It was a difficult decision to make the move but I’m glad I did.
How has working at Severn Trent challenged your expectations?
Initially the relocation from Yorkshire to the Midlands was a life changing move for me. I've been here just under two years, and the company has met all my expectations in driving to deliver against its promises. The move to the Midlands was challenging at the start, as starting fresh is never easy. However, in the short time I have been here I've settled in very quickly. People across the company have been very welcoming and supportive.
What’s been the biggest surprise about working here?
The biggest surprise about working here has been the ability the company has to listen. I was able to present new ideas and new ways of working, and people were very accommodating to these ideas. Also the sense of urgency and the desire to work at pace is greater than I thought it would be, and the sense we are all working towards that one common purpose.
What do you like about working here?
The way we're structured on a county level is really important to me. I’m able to look after the full end-to-end customer process of sewage treatment. It allows me to be more strategic in my approach. It really inspires me that in addition to my day job there are lots of opportunities to get involved in working groups to help drive improvements across the business. I’ve also been overwhelmed by the level of training the company invests in its people.
What are you most looking forward to in the short, medium and long term?
My current plan is to establish excellent performance in my current role and to continue to share my knowledge and experience which will contribute to our vision of being the most trusted water company. I'm absolutely committed to continue to develop myself as an individual and will aspire to be a general manager. I’ve been involved in our Talent Development centres which have helped me to identify my development needs and raise my profile across the business.
