Graduates & Undergrads
There are few opportunities to explore and impact the financial workings of a FTSE 100 company, from top to bottom. This is one of them.

Thank you for your interest. We are no longer accepting applications for this programme, with the last date for applications submitted on Sunday 21st March 2021.

Technical Leadership Programme - Finance

Finance is a trusted advisor, providing accurate and timely information that is integral to all key investment, operational, and strategic decisions. We play a vital role in supporting our businesses to provide clean water and wastewater services, and our non-regulated business.

Location: Coventry

Eligibility: Any completed degree discipline

Programme duration: 3 years

What you'll be doing

On this programme you’ll find out exactly how the financial department of a FTSE 100 company works, on-the-ground and in detail.

During your four placements, you’ll have the opportunity to explore all aspects of our financial function, your placements will focus on:

  • Core Accounting
  • Reporting
  • Business Partnering
  • Specialist areas

You’ll also discover how the nuts-and-bolts of our accounting operations link up with our corporate strategy. You’ll then work on key projects that will drive that transformation, with the opportunity to continue your journey beyond the programme, into a permanent position that matches your skills and interests.

With the emergence of new, sustainable technologies, and increased competition across the industry, there has never been a more exciting time to join Severn Trent.

With a combination of established and completely new challenges on the horizon, you can expect to work on projects that will teach and test you, in very different ways. These are some examples of the important work our current Graduates are doing:

  • Assisting with our financial and regulatory requirements
  • Business-wide implementation of new software solutions
  • Analysing and reporting on group performance
  • Developing new processes and system solutions and looking after key projects
  • Supporting our award-winning Investor Relations function

Training and Development

During your journey, you’ll receive a combination of technical, on-the-job training (delivered by your Line Manager, and shaped to your specific needs and interests), our world-class, business-wide development training, and external accountancy courses delivered by professional bodies.

At the same time, you’ll study for your professional accounting certification (either with ACCA or CIMA, according to your preference). You’ll also take on what we call ‘business-as-usual’ roles that already exist and are integral to our business, rather than having been created specifically for Graduates.

Every Graduate who passes through our Finance Programme will receive a professional accounting qualification, providing you pass your exams. However, this programme is also a gateway into key roles within our organisation:

The skills applicants need

We don't expect everyone to have had an opportunity to gain work experience in a similar sized organisation to ours.

As a development programme, we do encourage candidates to have evidence of their own personal development, and this can be evidenced in a number of ways, including work experience, volunteering, and through continuous learning.

We’re looking for people who’ll demonstrate curiosity. You’ll be able to grasp and learn things quickly, learning from your own and others experience, to improve performance in the future. You’ll be someone who is motivated by a strong desire to succeed and excel in each of your placements, taking pride and ownership of appropriate tasks and actions, knowing that what you do, makes a difference to our customers.

With a variety of placements and experiences, you’ll be someone who enjoys taking an analytical approach to analysing information from various sources, using this knowledge to inform robust solutions and decisions, demonstrating courage to see tasks through in their entirety.

We show care to our colleagues and customers alike and you'll be someone who is able to successfully build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, drawing on these relationships to understand their drivers, needs and expectations.
