Our Strategy
Organisations use different terminology to describe the way they address the impact that their activities have on the environment, wider society and future generations. The UK Government’s strategy in this area is referred to as sustainable development. We refer to corporate responsibility to describe the way we respond to these issues as a business.
This year we have made progress integrating CR into our business planning and risk management processes in both Severn Trent Water and Severn Trent Services. We have confirmed the structure for our CR policy and framework around the four areas of Workplace, Marketplace, Environment and Community. Within our CR policy we have set out goals to accompany each of these areas that set out the direction for our focus and performance.
Within this framework we focus on 10 CR areas which are critical to our management of risk and reputation. The 10 areas provide the focus for the forward agenda for the CR Committee.
To communicate our CR performance to all stakeholders we have utilised the Plc, Severn Trent Water and Severn Trent Services websites as well as producing a Summary Corporate Responsibility Report focused on some key issues that are of high priority to us and our stakeholders. Information can also be found in our Annual Report and Accounts. On this website we have provided an overview in each of the areas of our strategy and key risks, we have then used the businesses own websites to provide details of the activities that they are undertaking in response.
Focus on Severn Trent Water
In Severn Trent Water we have established eight key strategic intentions (KSIs) which form the basis of our 25 year strategic plan. The KSIs are underpinned by our vision to be the best water and waste water company in the UK and supported by 20 KPIs which we use to improve operational performance within the business. Many of the issues contained within the CR Framework such as climate change and affordability are integrated within our forward strategy which illustrates our holistic approach.
Focus on Severn Trent Services
In Severn Trent Services we are working to continuously build corporate responsibility into our strategy so that it becomes an integrated part of day to day business. The diversity and geographic spread of our three business groups (Water Purification, Operating Services and Analytical Services) means that our corporate responsibility agenda is very broad. The four areas of the CR framework align to our eight key strategic initiatives and define our strategy and how we will achieve our objectives. This approach ensures that CR is an integral part of our business plans.
Our 2010 Summary CR Report will be available from the 16th June 2010.
