Corporate Responsibility

Organisations use different terminology to describe the way they address the impact that their activities have on the environment, wider society and future generations. The UK Government’s strategy in this area is referred to as sustainable development. We refer to corporate responsibility to describe the way we respond to these issues as a business.

Corporate responsibility must be at the heart of the way we develop, manage and operate Severn Trent for long term sustainable benefit. It is not an add on to our business, but a fundamental must do. We should not create things to demonstrate our corporate responsibility, but aim to demonstrate it every single day – in the delivery of essential services, in the management of assets and in our investment in the places where we live and work.

This year we have produced a Summary Corporate Responsibility Report focused on some key issues that are linked to our 25 year strategy and our business plans, and that are key to our stakeholders. Information can also be found in our Annual Report and Accounts and of course on this website and those of our businesses Severn Trent Water and Severn Trent Services.

Focus on Severn Trent Water

In Severn Trent Water we have established eight key strategic intentions (KSIs) which form the basis of our 25 year strategic plan. The KSIs are underpinned by our vision to be the best water and waste water company in the UK and supported by 20 KPIs which we use to improve operational performance within the business. Many of the KPIs directly drive our focus on corporate responsibility, for example health and safety, employee motivation, water quality, pollution incidents, net energy use and leakage. We have developed specific corporate responsibility metrics which are used to manage and report on our performance. These are reported to the Executive and our Corporate Responsibility Committee.

Focus on Severn Trent Services

In Severn Trent Services we are working to continuously build corporate responsibility into our strategy so that it becomes an integrated part of day to day business. The diversity and geographic spread of our three business groups (Water Purification, Operating Services and Analytical Services) means that our corporate responsibility agenda is very broad. Over the coming year we plan to map our strategy and corporate responsibility issues to further embed corporate responsibility within our growth plans. While we undertake this work we continue to focus on a number of initiatives which support our corporate responsibility agenda. These are included within the Summary Corporate Responsibility Report.
