Organisations use different terminology to describe the way they address the impact that their activities have on the environment, wider society and future generations. The UK Government’s strategy in this area is referred to as sustainable development. We refer to corporate responsibility to describe the way we respond to these issues as a business.

Severn Trent has published a separate corporate responsibility report for many years. Our 2007 report followed a significant period of change for the group. The demerger of Biffa led to a refocused water business and changes in our organisational structure. The report reflected those changes focusing on our Group strategy and then reporting the progress of our two businesses; Severn Trent Water (STW) and Water Technology and Services (WTS).

In 2008 we have decided to further evolve our approach to corporate responsibility reporting. We have decided not to produce a stand-alone Corporate Responsibility Report but to ensure that the appropriate information is fully integrated within our main Annual Report and Accounts and other communication channels. This is consistent with our ethos that corporate responsibility runs throughout our business and is not a separate add-on element.

The information contained within our Annual Report covers the four areas of our Corporate Responsibility Strategy:

  • Environment – our approach to climate change, water efficiency, pollution prevention, water quality, biodiversity and resource management
  • Community – our education programme, employee volunteering, community investment and charitable giving
  • Marketplace – our approach to working with suppliers, ensuring appropriate standards for health and safety, environment, ethics and human rights and our work with vulnerable customers.
  • Workplace – our approach as a responsible employer covering health and safety, ethics, diversity of the workforce and employee motivation.

Further information on our strategies and the measures we are using to track our progress are provided on our website.
