Severn Trent's extensive approach to climate change focuses on understanding the impacts of climate change, developing adaptation strategies and raising awareness. The emphasis of our current work is to ensure that sufficient flexibility is built into our investment programmes to cope with the uncertainties and variability inherent in forecasting future climatic scenarios.
Assessing the impacts and developing strategies
Severn Trent Water has made significant progress in understanding the potential impact of climate change on its business.
We have assessed the outcomes arising from each of the United Kingdom Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) 2002 scenarios on water resources and demand. Severn Trent's Water Resources Plan identifies the ways in which we will meet the challenges while continuing to meet the expectations of our customers.
Capacity building and raising awareness of climate change and its implications are essential components of our work on adaptation. We have continued to work with UKCIP and other partners on climate change studies, including the West Midlands scoping study which was published in April 2004.
